Clean Air, Fareham BC & Our response

Fareham is one of 23 local authorities in the UK where areas have been identified that will breech legal limits for NO2 (nitrogen dioxide) pollution by 2020. In Fareham the area identified was Western Way, Eastern Way and A32 Market Quay. Fareham was, therefore, required to submit a plan to the government describing the measures it will take to improve air quality.

Fareham published the public consultation questions on its website in September 2018 with a closing date of 15th October. There were eleven questions each with some explanatory comments.

Members of Gosport & Fareham Friends of the Earth met on 17 September to decide our responses. Tim Pratt added additional material later.

On 17th October Cllr Trevor Cartwright, announced at the Warsash Residents’ Association meeting that the Council received an impressive 1,100 responses from people and organisations, ‘including a particularly good one from Tim Pratt of Gosport & Fareham Friends of the Earth’.

The measures that people supported included: making local buses and taxis greener, reviewing traffic lights in Fareham and Gosport, promoting more bus and ferry use, installing more electric vehicle charging points and season ticket promotions to name a few.

Ideas not supported included: appointment of an Air Quality Engagement Officer and the setting up of a ‘charging clear road air zone’ where people would be charged to go through it.
