‘It won’t go in the recycling bin and it’s too good to throw away – what shall I do with it?’

 

Clothes, Shoes and Bric-à-Brac in good condition can be taken to any Charity Shop.

OXFAM specialises in books and music, CDs and DVDs

Bottles, Books, Clothes, Music, Shoes and Handbags can be taken to the banks at Recycling Sites, many Supermarkets and Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs)

Shredded Paper should be collected in plastic bags, tied securely and placed in the cardboard skip at Recycling Sites

Plastic Film used for wrapping vegetables, bakery goods and household articles can be recycled with the plastic bags at the supermarkets  - ASDA, Tesco, the Co-op, WM Morrison, Sainsbury's and Waitrose as long as it is clean and uncontaminated with food particles. Please note that plastics marked 'degradable' or 'biodegradable' plastics cannot be recycled.

By European Law Used Batteries should be collected at any store that sells them - in practice you can take them to Sainsbury’s, the Co-op and Robert Dyas amongst others.

Energy efficient light bulbs need to be recycled properly, and this can be done at Homebase stores

Many Charity Shops like Plastic Bags for re-use in their shops – plastic bags can also be recycled at Sainsbury’s, the Co-op, Tesco’s and Waitrose  (Please note that Biodegradable/Degradable bags cannot be recycled)

Aluminium Foil is often collected at HWRCs. In Romsey on the Car Park near the Bus Station there’s a Foil Bank run by Alupro – try contacting them at www.alupro.com

Tetra Packs ( Milk, Soup and Juice Cartons ) are collected in Romsey on the same site as above and also in Chichester in the Waitrose Car Park near the Railway Station.  To recycle them by post please call the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment on 020 8977 6116 for Freepost stickers

Mailing Film can be sent to Polyprint Mailing Films Limited, Mackintosh Road, Rackheath Industrial Estate, Rackheath, Norwich NR13 6LT

To reduce your Junk Mail register online with the Mailing Preference Service or write to them at Freepost 22, London W1E 7EZ and ask for your name to be removed from their list

Furniture in good condition can be donated to the British Heart Foundation Charity Shop in the West Street, Fareham or Jacob’s Well in Leesland Road, Gosport

Electrical Goods in working condition can also be taken to the British Heart Foundation Charity Shop where they will be checked and sold safely

Plastic Milk Bottle Tops can be recycled at different points but please read the details of their requirements eg some must have 2 or 4 within the recycling symbol on the inside of the top – they must all be clean

Compost your own food and garden waste if you can. Use the Green Bags provided by the council for excess garden waste

Contact Fareham Borough Council or Gosport Borough Council for any other product you’re concerned about or check their websites

 

Remember that re-use is better than recycling and that the www.uk.freecycle.org website can offer real opportunities to get rid of unwanted goods and to find items for your own use
